Emergency Appeal: Violent Earthquake hits Nepal

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake has left nearly 700 dead in Nepal. Action Against Hunger has been in the country since 2011. We have mobilized our teams to access the immediate needs of the affected populations.

“Aftershocks are still being felt, and movements in the city of Kathmandu remain difficult,” says Shashwat Saraf, Regional Director of ACF operations in Asia.

“Most communications lines were cut following the earthquake.”

The epicenter of the earthquake took place in the Lamjung district, west of Kathmandu. The tremors were felt as far as northern India and Bangladesh. Buildings are damaged in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and over 1000 deaths have been reported so far, but the death toll is expected to rise. Our teams are now on site visiting the affected areas to assess the extent of the damage and the needs of families. It is likely that a humanitarian response will be launched to help those affected by the disaster.

Action Against Hunger has been operating in the eastern district of Saptari in Nepal since 2011, an area with one of the highest malnutrition rates. Nepal has one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world, with 400,000 children suffering from acute malnutrition.

ACF in Nepal

Action Against Hunger has been operating in the eastern district of Saptari in Nepal since 2011, an area severely affected by under-nutrition. Nepal has one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world, with 400,000 children suffering from acute malnutrition.

The ACF team, in coordination with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF, carry out a prevention, screening and treatment program for Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in children under five.

At every level ACF helps the government improve technical capacities and management of health professionals so they can add the treatment of SAM to their current care repertoire.

The mission endeavors to strengthen all components of the health system thanks to development of sustainable services on the national level, specifically by:

– Delivering care in the 13 outpatient treatment programs (OTP)

– Training of all health professionals in the district

– Supporting health authorities in preparing strategic documents.
